What About The Earth?

Today in this post ,we go back to the Year 1992,when over 1500 of the world's scientists--including more than half of all living Nobel Prize winners --signed The World Scientist Warning to Humanity. This document reflects growing concerns about the state of the biosphere:
Author:Moti Nissani
Nissani Moti is an inter disciplinarian holding degrees in genetics, philosophy ,and with many publications in genetics ,ecology ,politics ,science education ,and language instructions.
His essay below provides a brief introduction to the twin problems of overpopulation and deforestation ,especially in Nepal's context.

Nissani further writes:Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course.Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damages on the environment and on critical resources .If not checked ,many of our current practices put at risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner we know.Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about.
In an unusual joint statement of the same year, the Royal Society Of London and the U.S National Academy of Sciences concurred:
The future of our planet is in the balance ,sustainable development can be achieved, but only if irreversible degradation of the environment can be halted in the time .The next 30 yrs may be crucial.
The facts speak for themselves. The chances of contracting cancer, emphysema,or asthma, are far higher now than they were a century ago.Human sperm counts in many localities are worrisomely low. Many of us suffer from premature hearing loss traceable to excessive noise.
We work longer hours than our parents did and spent more time in getting to and from work.We are troubled by the effects of such things as lead and dioxin on our children's intelligence and health. We think twice nowadays, before plunging in hot summer days, into possibly contaminated rivers ,lakes or seas.We can no longer experiance true wilderness. We are uneasy about poisons in our food and drinks;in our homes and work place ;in our air, water, soil;in our brainsand livers,in our pets, domestic animals ,lawns, and farms.
We are surrounded by signs of global environmental decline.Worldwide, some species of frogs, salamanders, and penguins are declining. We have apparently learned nothing from the extinctionof the dodoand the great auk,of the wild of the most human-like minds we know of-those of apes and cetaceans -is in doubt.Entire fisheries are acting as f there are no such things as carrying capacity and future and future generation ;as if we have learned nothing from the environmental failures of earlier civilisations. We continue to produce plutoniumand other long-lived poisons, even though we know that nothing on earth can be safely sequestered for millennia. We continue to litter space. When we fight pollution,we typically try to partially clean things up after the fact ,insted of opting for the cheaper and healthier path of preventions of sizzling temperatures ,floods, tropical diseases and mass migrations will prove wrong.
It takes a great deal of study and reflection to undersatnd the nature ,causes ,consequences, and cures of just one of these environmental ills.No comprehensive coverage of any single ecological issue can be undertaken in this brief, introductory essay.Instead,I shall only limit myself to a few cursory remarks about two major interrelated challenges:overpopulation and deforestation .In doing so ,I hope to alert you to the seriousness of both and to the need for collective and personal actions.

LONDON:Gordon Brown, Former Labour leader has been named the third worst prime minister since World War II, a survey by more than 100 leading academics revealed.

Inappropriate content in Jakarta's Parliament

JAKARTA: Computer screens at the Indonesian parliament broadcast porn images in an incident that caused a shock among journalists and legislators, reports said on Tuesday.

Journalists trying to check the parliamentary schedule found two touch-screen terminals located near the media room had been diverted to a pornographic website showing hardcore photographs, including "young teens", the Jakarta Globe newspaper reported.

The images were displayed for 15 minutes before officials switched off the screens.

"It's not a funny incident," Roy Suryo, a Democratic Party lawmaker, was quoted by the Globe as saying. "Someone must be held responsible for it."

Roy said it appeared that someone had copied images from a pornographic site, saved them and then uploaded them to the parliament's website.

The embarrassing incident came as the government is working to block porn websites as part of a campaign against undesirable internet content.

Lucy liu

Birth Name
Lucy Alexis Liu

Height
5' 3" (1.60 m)

Mini Biography

Born to Chinese immigrants in Queens, New York, Lucy Liu has always tried to balance an interest in her cultural heritage with a desire to move beyond a strictly Asian-American experience. Once relegated to "ethnic" parts, the energetic actress is finally earning her stripes as an across-the-board leading lady.

Liu graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1986 and enrolled in New York University; discouraged by the "dark and sarcastic" atmosphere of NYU, however, she transferred to the University of Michigan after her freshman year. She graduated from UM with a degree in Chinese Language and Culture, managing to squeeze in some additional training in dance, voice, fine arts, and acting. During her senior year, Liu auditioned for a small part in a production of Alice in Wonderland and walked away with the lead; encouraged by the experience, she decided to take the plunge into professional acting. She moved to Los Angeles and split her time between auditions and food service day jobs, eventually scoring a guest appearance as a waitress on"Beverly Hills 90210" (1990). That performance led to more walk-on parts in shows like"NYPD Blue" (1993), "ER" (1994), and"The X-Files"(1993). In 1996, she was cast as an ambitious college student on Rhea Perlman's ephemeral sitcom"Pearl"(1996).

Liu first appeared on the big screen as an ex-girlfriend in Jerry Mcguire (1996) (she had previously filmed a scene in the indie "Bang" (1995), but it was shelved for two years). She then waded through a series of supporting parts in small films before landing her big break on"Ally Mcbeal" (1997). Liu initially auditioned for the role of Nelle Porter, which went to Portia De ROSSI writer-producer David .E.Kelly"was so impressed with her spunk that he promised to write a part for her in an upcoming episode. The part turned out to be that of growling, ill-tempered lawyer Ling Woo, which Liu filled with such aplomb that she was signed on as a regular cast member.

The "Ally" win gave Liu's film career a much-needed boost--in 1999, she was cast as a dominatrix in the Mel Gibson action flick Payback (1999/I), and as a hitchhiker in the ill-received boxing saga Play it to the bone (1999). The next year brought even larger roles: first as the kidnapped Princess Pei Pei inJackie Chan's western Shanghai Noon (2000), then as one-third of the comely crime-fighting trio inCharlie's Angels(2000).

When she's not hissing at clients or throwing well-coiffed punches, Liu keeps busy with an eclectic mix of off-screen hobbies. She practices the martial art of Kali-Eskrima-Silat (knife-and-stick fighting), skis, rock climbs, rides horses, and plays the accordion. In 1993 she exhibited a collection of multimedia art pieces at the Cast Iron Gallery in SoHo (New York), after which she won a grant to study and create art in China. Her hectic schedule doesn't leave much time for romantic intrigue, but Liu says she prefers to keep that side of her life uncluttered.

Katrina Kaif:

Date of Birth
16 July ,1984,London,England, U.K.

Nickname
Kat

Height
5' 8½" (1.74 m)

Mini Biography

Born in Hong Kong

on July 16, 1984 Katrina Kaif is one of eight

siblings, all girls, from a mother who is a Caucasian of British Nationality, and a father who was formerly from Kashmir, India, but who has since acquired British citizenship. Her mother is now re-settled in Chennai (formerly known as Madras), the Capital of the state of Tamil Nadu in India.

She spent subsequent years in Hawaii, and then in London, Britain, She started modeling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the tender age of 14, when she was approached for a jewelry campaign. Thereafter she continued modeling in London.

Continuing to model was the reason she got her break in a Bollywood movie 'Boom' offered by none other than film-maker Kaizad Gustad.

She was flooded with modeling assignments the minute she set her foot on Indian soil, especially with her innocent expressive face, hour-glass figure, and drop-dead gorgeous looks.

Professionally she started off as a model with photographer Atul Kasbekar, and upon being accepted, she received offers from LG, Cola, Fevicol, Lakme, & Veet. It was the Lakme commercial that got her noticed. She retained Matrix as her Manager to accept work on her behalf and at the price she deserved.

Moving to different culture and country was not much of a culture shock for her, as she states that no matter where you come from, the bottom line is that everyone wants to be loved, respected, and cared for.

Despite of her positive attitude, she had been stereotyped as "Indian" by extreme right-wingers in Britain who made it clear that she did not quite fit-in with their "Blonde" Caucasian culture; while on the other hand in India itself she had been ranked as an 'outsider' very much like Sonia Gandhi.

Unlike other artistes from foreign lands, Katrina did not experience any difficulties in getting a visa nor of getting it extended in India.

Although linguistically challenged, Katrina puts on a bold face and states that other Bollywood artistes like Sridevi, who did not know Hindi, did get offers from Bollywood film-makers, and she is no different. She has taken Hindi and dancing lessons to fit in with the Bollywood culture. She likes to display a picture of her learning Kathak dancing where she used to dance 7 hours a day non-stop.

Adorned with soft gorgeous looks, she is not easily intimidated, but admits that she is very emotional, sensitive, and concerned about her privacy, Almost an incurable romantic, she prefers to wear comfortable non-revealing clothes when at home, hates to do her hair, and above all dislikes make-up. Admitting to being lonely in the beginning, but now has several friends who she can hang out with.

Although her first movie 'Boom' was panned by the critics and shunned by the audiences, two other Telugu movies 'Malliswari' and 'Pidugu' did get her noticed. She grossed 70 Lakh Rupees for 'Malliswari' - making her top the list of the highest paid actresses during a South Indian movie debut.

Not done with South Indian movies, she has been signed in a Tamil movie 'Bheema' opposite National AwardWinner Vikram.

She has received decent reviews for her part in "Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya", as well as a brief appearance in 'Sarkar'.

Katrina had made Mumbai her base, didn't mind singing and dancing around trees and as a result is now one of the biggest mega-stars, perhaps one of the highest paid female-lead actresses in Bollywood, and a crowd-puller whenever she makes an appearance for a live song and dance number.

Mahalepi:Tasty Pudding From cyprus!

Cyprus is one among that country which provides variety of food with a graet range of variation. The vegetables are fresh, plentiful and varied. We have not yet discovered the 'benefits' of irradiation' and fresh local produce can be bought in carrier bags as they begin to 'turn' for about £1 a bag, no matter what the contents. This is very handy for preparing such long lasting staples as tomato sauce and various other pickles and jams. It is also a good reason to purchase a fruit juicer and freezer. Please note that for ease of use, the local names we use here are not necessarily spelled correctly, but if you say them as they are written, you should be understood. If you are a vegetarian, you will find meat on every menu, but you will also be delighted with the salads and the vegetables you will also find, some are prepared in the oven with unusual dishes such as large butter beans casseroled with vegetables in the oven, Cauliflower oven baked in tomato sauce with Commanderia, green beans also in a tomato sauce, a vegetable named kolokasi, ( which needs to be broken into pieces and not sliced or it will become slimy,) again cooked with tomato's, different types of bean (fasolia) haricot beans cooked with carrot, potatoes, celery, onions and tomato, black eyed beans cooked with lahana (a type of spinach) and all manner of stuffed peppers, courgette, mushrooms and aubergines. Pourghouri (pronounce it poor gory) is a nice dish, cracked bulgher wheat with vermicelli cooked with onion and tomatoes. Similar to a cous cous, although not really, but often called cous cous here by mistake.
YOU OUGHT TO TASTE THIS MONTH!!

MAHALEPI

Pudding made of "Maize flower" served with rosewater and sugar.

OR

Mahalepi, a Cypriot dessert which is flavoured with rosewater and rose petals. Mahalepi is an acquired taste you need to get used to it!

ENVIRONMENT TO EAT MAHALEPI:
Mahalepi can be eaten when there are few clouds and some gentle breeze -u'll taste MAGIC!

WHEN YOU HAVE ONE SPOON OF MAHALEPI:
Mahaepi is that dish which will take you to -Cyprus.

PLACE TO HAVE MAHALEPI:
You can have Mahalepi sitting in between a corn field,or simply on terrace.

HERE IS HOW IT GOES:

Mahalepi

This is how you make the pudding:

80g rice flour
90g caster sugar
1 tsp rose water
550ml milk
550ml water

And this is for the syrup

80g caster sugar
60ml water
2 tsp rose water
185ml water extra (iced for preference)

Put the flour, sugar, rose water, milk and water into a pan and bring to the boil, whisking all the while. Continue to whisk for a few more minutes after it comes to the boil, before removing from heat. Allow it to cool a little and then pour into serving bowls. The recipe suggested four, I managed reasonable portions for six. Leave to cool.

To make the syrup, heat the water (I just used a jug in the microwave) and then stir in the sugar until dissolved. Add the rose water and the extra iced water. Refrigerate until needed.

When ready to serve (everything should be well-chilled), pour a small amount of the syrup over the pudding and serve.

Serves 4-6

IT WILL SOOTH YOUR SOUL ,TRUST ME.

You can color the syrup lightly with rose petals, or cherries, but, it's so pure and clear, I prefer the surrounding to color it instead.

LIKEWISE,IF,
you want it to taste little bit extra ordinary then you ought to prepare it with some greek-touch in it :
the method of preparing it in greek way is:

Stir the corn flour and sugar in 2 cups/375ml/ 13 fl oz of the
water until blended in a large pan.

Add the remaining water.
Switch on the heat and stir continuously with a wooden spoon to avoid any lumps forming.
As it,begins to bubble, add the rose water and lower the heat. Continue stirring
for a few minutes until thickened. Pour into wet bowls and leave to cool and set.

The next day, refrigerate for several hours. Before serving, have a large
bowl ready filled with cold water. Wet your hand and carefully push the
mahalepi out of their bowls into the water. Serve with extra sugar and rose water.

This very refreshing sweet is perfect for the summer months. As an
alternative to the usual white mahalepi, replace the rose water with triantafillo,
a rose-flavored syrup, to make pink mahalepi.

Similarly, mahalepi can also be prepared with strawberries or cherries, all you need to do is when you leave it for cooling before you refrigerate it you need to add few pieces of strawberries or cherries and then refrigerate it.

Top 10 mental disorders

Millions of people are affected by some weird mental disorders that land them into years of psychotherapy. In some cases, the psychological problem suffered is extremely rare or strange.

This is a list of the ten most rare and strange mental disorders.

10. Lima Syndrome

This is where the hostage takers become more sympathetic to the needs of the hostages.

It is named after the Japanese embassy hostage crisis in Lima, Peru.It began on December 17, 1996 and ended on April 22, 1997,where 14 members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) took hundreds of people hostage at a party at the official residence of Japan’s ambassador to Peru. The hostages consisted of diplomats, government and military officials, and business executives of many nationalities who happened to be at the party at the time.

Within a few days of the hostage crisis, the militants had released most of the captors, with seeming disregard for their importance, including the future President of Peru, and the mother of the current President.

After months of unsuccessful negotiations, all remaining hostages were freed by a raid by Peruvian commandos, although one hostage was killed.

9. Stockholm Syndrome

The exact opposite of Lima Syndrome-Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage, in which the hostage shows signs of sympathy, loyalty or even voluntary compliance with the hostage taker, regardless of the risk in which the hostage has been placed. The syndrome is also discussed in other cases, including those of rape,wife-beating and child abuse.

The syndrome is named after a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden, in which the bank robbers held bank employees hostage from August 23 to August 28 in 1973. In this case, the victims became emotionally attached to their victimizers, and even defended their captors after they were freed from their six-day ordeal, refusing to testify against them. Later, after the gang were tried and sentenced to jail, one of them married a woman who had been his hostage.

A famous example of Stockholm syndrome is the story of Patty Hearst, a millionaire’s daughter who was kidnapped in 1974, seemed to develop sympathy with her captors, and later took part in a robbery they were orchestrating.

8. Diogenes Syndrome

Diogenes was an ancient Greek philosopher, who lived in a wine barrel and promoted ideas of nihilism and animalism. Famously, when he was asked by Alexander the Great what he wanted most in the world, he replied, “For you to get out of my sunlight!”

Diogenes syndrome is a condition characterised by extreme self neglect, reclusive tendencies, and compulsive hoarding, sometimes of animals. It is found mainly in old people and is associated with senile breakdown.

The syndrome is actually a misnomer since Diogenes lived an ascetic and transient life, and there are no sources to indicate that he neglected is own hygiene.

7. Paris Syndrome

Paris syndrome is a condition exclusive to Japanese tourists and nationals, which causes them to have a mental breakdown while in the famous city. Of the millions of Japanese tourists that visit the city every year, around a dozen suffer this illness and have to be returned to their home country.

The condition is basically a severe form of ‘culture shock’. Polite Japanese tourists who come to the city are unable to separate their idyllic view of the city, seen in such films as Amelie, with the reality of a modern, bustling metropolis.

Japanese tourists who come into contact with, say, a rude French waiter, will be unable to argue back and be forced to bottle up their own anger which eventually leads to a full mental breakdown.

The Japanese embassy has a 24hr hotline for tourists suffering for severe culture shock, and can provide emergency hospital treatment if necessary.

6. Stendhal Syndrome

Stendhal Syndrome is a psychosomatic illness that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to art, usually when the art is particularly ‘beautiful’ or a large amount of art is in a single place. The term can also be used to describe a similar reaction to a surfeit of choice in other circumstances, e.g. when confronted with immense beauty in the natural world.

It is named after the famous 19th century French author Stendhal who described his experience with the phenomenon during his 1817 visit to Florence, Italy in his book Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio.

5. Jerusalem Syndrome

The Jerusalem syndrome is the name given to a group of mental phenomena involving the presence of either religiously themed obsessive ideas, delusions or other psychosis-like experiences that are triggered by, or lead to, a visit to the city of Jerusalem. It is not endemic to one single religion or denomination, but has affected Jews and Christians of many different backgrounds.

The condition seems to emerge while in Jerusalem and causes psychotic delusions which tend to dissipate after a few weeks. Of all the people who have suffered this spontaneous psychosis, all have had a history of previous mental illness, or where deemed not to have been ‘well’ before coming to the city.

4. Capgras Delusion

The Capgras delusion is a rare disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that an acquaintance, usually a spouse or other close family member, has been replaced by an identical looking impostor.

It is most common in patients with schizophrenia, although it occur in those with dementia, or after a brain injury.

One case report said the following:

Mrs. D, a 74-year old married housewife, recently discharged from a local hospital after her first psychiatric admission, presented to our facility for a second opinion. At the time of her admission earlier in the year, she had received the diagnosis of atypical psychosis because of her belief that her husband had been replaced by another unrelated man. She refused to sleep with the impostor, locked her bedroom and door at night, asked her son for a gun, and finally fought with the police when attempts were made to hospitalize her. At times she believed her husband was her long deceased father. She easily recognized other family members and would misidentify her husband only.

The paranoia induced by this condition has made it a common tool in science fiction books and films, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Total Recall and The Stepford Wives.

3. Fregoli Delusion

The exact opposite of the Capgras delusion - the Fregoli delusion is a rare disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that different people are in fact a single person who changes appearance or is in disguise.

The condition is named after the Italian actor Leopoldo Fregoli who was renowned for his ability to make quick changes of appearance during his stage act.

It was first reported 1927 by two psychiatrists who discussed the case study of a 27 year old woman who believed that she was being persecuted by two actors whom she often went to see at the theatre. She believed that these people “pursued her closely, taking the form of people she knows or meets.”

2. Cotard Delusion

The Cotard delusion is a rare psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that he or she is dead, does not exist, is putrefying or has lost their blood or internal organs. Rarely, it can include delusions of immortality.

One case study said the following:

[The patient’s] symptoms occurred in the context of more general feelings of unreality and being dead. In January, 1990, after his discharge from hospital in Edinburgh, his mother took him to South Africa. He was convinced that he had been taken to hell (which was confirmed by the heat), and that he had died of septicaemia (which had been a risk early in his recovery), or perhaps from AIDS (he had read a story in The Scotsman about someone with AIDS who died from septicaemia), or from an overdose of a yellow fever injection. He thought he had “borrowed my mother’s spirit to show me round hell”, and that he was asleep in Scotland.

It is named after Jules Cotard, a French neurologist who first described the condition, which he called “le délire de négation” (”negation delirium”), in a lecture in Paris in 1880.

1. Reduplicative Paramnesia

Reduplicative paramnesia is the delusional belief that a place or location has been duplicated, existing in two or more places simultaneously, or that it has been ‘relocated’ to another site. For example, a person may believe that they are in fact not in the hospital to which they were admitted, but an identical-looking hospital in a different part of the country, despite this being obviously false, as one case study reported:

A few days after admission to the Neurobehavioural Center, orientation for time was intact, he could give details of the accident (as related to him by others), could remember his doctors’ names and could learn new information and retain it indefinitely. He exhibited, however, a distinct abnormality of orientation for place. While he quickly learned and remembered that he was at the Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospital (also known as the Boston Veterans Administration Hospital), he insisted that the hospital was located in Taunton, Massachusetts, his home town. Under close questioning, he acknowledged that Jamaica Plain was part of Boston and admitted it would be strange for there to be two Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospitals. Nonetheless, he insisted that he was presently hospitalized in a branch of the Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospital located in Taunton. At one time he stated that the hospital was located in the spare bedroom of his house.

The term ‘reduplicative paramnesia’ was first used in 1903 by the Czechoslovakian neurologist Arnold Pick to describe a condition in a patient with suspected Alzheimer’s disease who insisted that she had been moved from Pick’s city clinic, to one she claimed looked identical but was in a familiar suburb. To explain the discrepancy she further claimed that Pick and the medical staff worked at both locations
